Que ne doit-on pas à la religion bienfaisante et pure, dont l’éclatante lumière a pour jamais anéanti de si monstrueuses erreurs ! […] Cette fable est assurément l’une des plus absurdes de la mythologie, puisque les Dieux accordèrent au repentir d’un crime atroce ce qu’ils n’avoient jamais accordé à la vertu la plus pure. Andando su queste traccie, riesce più facile o almeno più probabile la spiegazione di molte idee mitologiche degli antichi Pagani ; e facendo tesoro delle interpretazioni che hanno date alle medesime, non solo i nostri poeti, e principalmente l’Alighieri, ma pur anco i filosofi di maggior fama, possiamo almeno conoscere quale opinione avessero dell’antica sapienza contenuta nella Mitologia gli uomini più grandi e più sommi. […] Passata quest’epoca, che è la più poetica e che ha dato origine e materia ai più celebri poemi epici, si continua la personificazione di nuove idee astratte, non solo delle virtù, ma pur anco dei vizii, e si termina con l’apoteosi degl’Imperatori romani, che fu l’ultimo anelito del Paganesimo.

C’était le pur polythéisme des plus beaux temps de la Grèce et de Rome. […] Cet homme lavera ses vêtements, et il sera pur. Il culto di Vesta aveva importanza non solo relativamente alla religione, ma pur anco alla politica. […] Ebbero luogo pur troppo, e più d’una volta ; ed anche in Tito Livio ne troviamo il ricordo e la narrazione49.

Dicono i Mitologi che egli pure fosse re di Corinto ; ma il suo nome non trovasi nella greca cronologia di questi re ; e forse perciò aggiungono che fu subito dopo detronizzato da Preto e costretto a restar come ostaggio alla corte di lui. […] Anzi sulla base o radicale di questa parola si son formati in italiano vocaboli di cui non esistono gli equivalenti neppure in latino, cioè il verbo chimerizzare e i nomi chimerizzatore e chimerizzatrice, i quali sebbene sieno poco usati parlando, pur si trovano registrati nei nostri Vocabolari.

Le ciel était toujours pur, l’air embaumé du parfum des fleurs, et l’on ne connaissait pas d’autre saison que le printemps. […] Le mouvement de sa tête faisait trembler l’Olympe et la terre entière ; il représentait l’Éther, ou l’air pur des hautes régions de l’atmosphère. […] Au sortir du combat, les vainqueurs vont s’asseoir à la table des dieux, et ils savourent le lait de la chèvre Heidrun, la bière la plus pure, et les membres fumants d’un sanglier, toujours intact, toujours renaissant, pour satisfaire leur appétit.

E in questo stesso significato si usa nelle scienze anche oggidì, per non star sempre a rammentare il nome di Dio : e non solo nelle scienze fisiche, ma pur anco nelle scienze morali, come per esempio, dove si tratta del diritto naturale. […] I moderni, dopo l’invenzione del telescopio, scoprirono molti altri pianeti, e ai primi e principali da loro scoperti diedero il nome degli altri Dei superiori, esclusi soltanto l’Orco, ossia Plutone, Bacco e il Genio ; e poi ricorsero anche ai nomi delle divinità secondarie o inferiori ; e ora a quei pianeti che scuoprono di mano in mano quasi tutti gli anni, e qualche volta più d’uno all’ anno, attribuiscono un nome pur che sia ; e qualcuno dei più celebri scienziati, a preghiera dell’ astronomo scopritore, propone il nome da darsi al neo-scoperto pianeta ; il qual nome è subito comunicato a tutto l’orbe scientifico che lo registra premurosamente in tutti i suoi periodici e in tutte le carte uranografiche coi connotati caratteristici e distintivi, ossia con tutti quegli elementi astronomici che furono sino allora osservati e calcolati.

Questa invenzione dell’aurea catena che lega la Terra al Cielo è sempre sembrata sì bella e sapiente, che non solo fu accolta con plauso dai poeti e dai letterati, ma commentata pur anco splendidamente dai filosofi, e tra questi da quel potente e straordinario ingegno del nostro Giovan Battista Vico66. […] M. non solo nelle iscrizioni dei documenti storici delle chiese e di altre fabbriche addette al culto, ma pur anco ne’ monumenti e nelle epigrafi delle sepolture.

Che il nome di Cadmea fosse dato alla fortezza di Tebe e conservato pur anco a tempo della conquista dei Romani è notizia storica confermata anche da Cornelio Nipote nelle sue Vite degli eccellenti capitani greci. […] Una origine miracolosa e divina si attribuivano pur anco le diverse caste degli Indiani.

Si eran provati pur anco ad inventare che i Venti avessero mosso guerra a Giove ; ma i poeti trovaron poco spiritosa questa invenzione e la trascurarono affatto. […] Egli infatti colle indicazioni astronomiche ci fa conoscere non solo i giorni del suo viaggio allegorico, ma pur anco le ore diverse di quei giorni.

Credevasi di cattivo augurio che il primo giorno dell’anno si lasciasse trascorrere inerte senza adempiere pur anco gli obblighi del proprio stato. […] Essa pure si dilettava di sangue e di stragi, come afferma Orazio, dicendola gaudentem cruentis.

Ed è questa l’opinione non solo dei commentatori della Bibbia, ma pur anco del sommo Alighieri, il quale nel Canto xxviii del Purgatorio, descrivendo le bellezze del Paradiso terrestre, fa dire alla celeste Matelda : « Quelli che anticamente poetaro « L’età dell’oro e suo stato felice « Forse in Parnaso esto loco sognaro. […] Con tutti questi diversi emblemi s’intende facilmente che sta a simboleggiare il Tempo ; e secondariamente si vuol considerarlo come uno degli Dei dell’agricoltura, perchè la falce può significare egualmente che il tempo atterra ossia distrugge tutte le cose ; e indicare pur anco la principale operazione della mietitura.

E il nostro Dante valendosi della facoltà consentita ai poeti greci e latini, e specialmente dietro l’esempio di Virgilio suo maestro ed autore, costruì un Inferno che sarà sempre una maraviglia non solo della sua fantasia, ma pur anco della sua sapienza morale e politica. […] Dante pur conservando le credenze e i principii teologici del Cristianesimo, e introducendo i diavoli a tormentare i dannati, non ha voluto rinunziare a valersi di alcune delle invenzioni mitologiche dei Pagani, che potevan meglio servire alla immaginata allegorìa del suo poema.

Ma o prima o poi che l’infortunio accadesse, anche Omero chiama Vulcano l’inclito zoppo, e come zoppo Vulcano è conosciuto questo Nume anche dal nostro volgo ; e la fama dei suoi esterni difetti, benchè a lui non imputabili, si è maggiormente diffusa (come accade pur troppo nel mondo) ed è stata più durevole di quella dei suoi rarissimi pregi nella Metallurgia. […] Chi si ricorda che anche Vesta giovane era considerata come Dea del fuoco, non si dovrà maravigliare che due Divinità fossero assegnate dai mitologi a questo elemento, quando pur si rammenti che avevan fatto presiedere alla Terra tre Dee, come notammo nel N° VIII, e trovammo che ciascuna aveva speciali attributi per distinguersi dall’altra.

Vesta was the daughter of Saturn; the goddess of fire; emblematical of that pure vital heat, which, being diffused through the frame of Man, enlivens and cherishes him. Ed asserivasi che per quanto le prossime coste dell’Italia e della Sicilia biancheggiassero di ossa umane delle vittime delle Sirene, pur non ostante chi udiva anche da lontano il loro canto non poteva resistere alla tentazione di avvicinarsi a loro per udirle meglio, e non pensava più alla trista fine inevitabile che lo attendeva. […] Inoltre la Balena con tutta la sua gigantesca statura, che quando alza l’enorme sua testa perpendicolarmente fuori dell’acqua, l’illuso marinaio la crede uno scoglio ; e per quanto sia straordinaria e tremenda la sua forza, che quando flagella furiosamente le onde colla potente sua pinna produce una piccola tempesta e ne rimbomba il suono per le solitudini dell’artico Oceano come il romor del cannone, pur tuttavia ben lungi dall’avere spiriti guerreschi e sanguinarii, è assolutamente priva di coraggio ; per cui se anche un uccelletto marino le si posa sul dorso, le cagiona grande inquietezza e paura.

Vulcan also fabricated palaces of pure gold for the celestial deities. […] The gods of the heathen were not represented as pure intelligences, that is, as spirits without animal wants. They appear as virgins, young, beautiful, modest, amiable, innocent, pure, lightly drest, and in elegant attitudes, and with their hands connected, to show the mutual affection that subsisted between them. L’un, appelé Picus, est un volatile aérien destiné à porter aux hommes les paroles des Dieux ; l’autre, sous le nom de Faune, est en réalité l’air pur et tiède qui active la fertilisation et développe la germination ; puis un troisième est Evandre : c’est l’homme bienfaiteur des hommes, dont nous retrouverons plus loin des synonymes dans les personnages appelés Cécrops et Cadmus. […] Ce culte, fondé par Orphée, exigeait une vie pure, religieuse, scientifique, et défendait de manger aucune viande d’animaux.

Latona bent and tried to reach the pure water with her lips, for both her arms were burdened with the children. […] said Latona in surprise, “surely you wijl not forbid me to drink of this pure water, which the gods have put here for all to enjoy! […] She was as beautiful as the dewy morning; and it did not take Orpheus’ music to make her good, for she had never had a thought that was not pure and lovely. […] At first it was red and looked like blood, but as it flowed on, it became clearer and clearer, until at last, pure as crystal, it sprang into the sea and joined Galatea in her cave under the waters; and there the gentle youth and the white sea nymph lived as happily as though the poor, ugly, old Polyphemus had never seen them.

Anche questa stranezza potrebbe spiegarsi come un simbolo della forza distruggitrice del tempo, che logora, come dice Ovidio, pur anco le dure selci e i diamanti 23.

Quando poi cessarono le persecuzioni, e i re stessi e gl’imperatori divenner cristiani, si dileguò ben presto il politeismo dal mondo romano, e il Cristianesimo si diffuse pur anco fra i popoli barbari, fuor dei confini del romano impero.

Nè soltanto nell’Inferno e nel Purgatorio, ma pur anco nel Paradiso sino all’ultimo canto, si trovano frasi, comparazioni e similitudini mitologiche.

I Grammatici noteranno in questo verso il pronome egli invece di eglino per troncamento della sillaba finale, che nella metrica latina e greca direbbesi apocope ; come pure il verbo orate per adorate, che è una licenza poetica chiamata aferesi.

Questa facoltà poetica di rappresentare con descrizioni o con immagini sculte o dipinte qualunque virtù, qualunque vizio, qualunque idea astratta non è già spenta negli uomini dei nostri tempi ; anzi vedesi sempre rinnuovata non solo nelle moderne poesie, ma pur anco nei monumenti ove le Virtù civili e militari, ed anche le religiose, sono rappresentate per mezzo di figure umane accompagnate da oggetti simbolici che ne suggeriscono il significato ed il nome, senza bisogno di scriverlo sulla base delle medesime o in qualche parte delle loro vesti o dei loro ornamenti.

In quanto ai Lari, che questi fossero Dei familiari o domestici non può insorger questione, poichè li consideran tali tutti i Mitologi ed i poeti latini e pur anco gl’ Italiani : lo stesso Ugo Foscolo, peritissimo nelle lingue dotte e per conseguenza anche nella Mitologia, li chiama nel suo Carme I Sepolcri, come abbiamo veduto altrove, i domestici Lari.

Sono tuttora soggetto d’interminabili dispute non solo il feticismo e l’interpretazione dei geroglifici, ma pur anco le piramidi, gli obelischi, l’istmo, le oasi, il delta, le bocche o foci del Nilo e la stessa sorgente di questo fiume.

Perciò il loro numero non potrebbero dirlo nemmeno i più valenti Geografi, in quanto che non sono stati a contar sul globo tutte le fonti, e tanto meno tutti i boschi e boschetti, a cui pur presiedevano almeno altrettante Ninfe.

Non solo Ovidio ed altri poeti raccontano questo fatto mitologico, ma pur anco Strabone il geografo e Pausania lo storico lo registrano, e come fisicamente possibile, e come realmente vero.

La tradizione del diluvio universale è dunque non soltanto biblica, ma pur anco mitologica, ossia affermata nelle diverse e più opposte religioni e credenze ; e vi si aggiunge la moderna scienza geologica a dimostrarne la verità anche agli scettici, o universali dubitatori.

La vie littéraire apparaît alors dans son vrai jour ; on regrette d’avoir trop vite imprimé et trop imprimé ; d’avoir compromis, souvent en pure perte, sa tranquillité et ses forces, et l’on ne demande plus au Ciel, comme le nautonier d’ Horace, que de goûter enfin, après cette vaine agitation, un calme véritable, un calme bienfaisant et réparateur. […] Mais cette métamorphose ne diminua point l’amour d’Alphée : ses eaux traversaient le fond des mers sans se mêler à l’onde salée, et venaient s’unir, toujours pures et limpides, aux eaux d’Aréthuse.
