9. (1909) The myths of Greece and Rome

To prevent their ever-making use of it against him, he seized them immediately after their birth, hurled them down into a dark abyss called Tartarus, and there chained them fast. […] Repeatedly she heard them call and beseech her to join them; yet she persisted in her attempt. […] Afraid lest he should never see them again were he now to lose sight of them, he pursued them hotly; but the nymphs sped on, until, their strength failing, they called upon their patroness’s aid. […] It was now too late to prevent the marriages, so calling his daughters aside, he told them what the oracle had said, and, giving them each a sharp dagger, bade them slay their husbands on their wedding night. […] To prevent their causing serious disasters, he therefore ruled them with a very strict hand, kept them closely confined in a great cave, and let them loose only one at a time, to stretch their limbs and take a little exercise.
