[…] At Delphi and at Athens the priestesses were not virgins, as at the other temples, but widows who were past the time of marriage. […] Augustus, who pretended to be the son of Apollo, built a temple to him on Mount Palatine. […] In her temple of Euploca, at Cnidos, was the most admired of her statues, being the most perfect piece of Praxiteles. […] They were sometimes reckoned among the Gods, and had a temple at Corinth, where worship and sacrifices were solemnly offered.
