23. (1836) The new pantheon; or, an introduction to the mythology of the ancients

Rhea, Jupiter’s mother, had the address to save him, and sent him from Arcadia, where he then was, into Crete, to the recesses of Mount Ida. […] Jupiter was said to have sent Bacchus into India to exterminate a sinful nation; and it is recorded, that Moses was commanded, by the true God, to do the same in Palestine.
