31. (1832) A catechism of mythology

Orpheus played on his harp, and sang the praises of the gods with such effect, that he overcome the Sirens. […] “Patriots, who perish’d for their country’s right, Or nobly triumph’d in the field of fights: There holy priests, and sacred poets stood, Who sang with all the raptures of a god: Worthies, who life by useful arts refined; With those, who leave a deathless name behind, Friends of the world, and fathers of mankind.” […] Sacrifices were offered to the divinities, and libations made in their honour; but the celebration of their funeral pomp, during which they sang their most brilliant exploits, was confined to heroes.
