From his lofty throne on the topmost peak of Mount Olympus Jupiter beheld an unusual light upon earth. […] At last, exhausted and ready to sink, he lifted his eyes once more to view the cheering light. […] If the light of the lamp revealed, as they felt sure it would, the hideous countenance and distorted form of a monster, they bade her use the dagger to kill him. […] The lamp, which she held high above her head, cast its light full upon the face and form of a handsome youth. […] He is said to have first seen the light in Thrace, a country noted for its fierce storms and war-loving people.
