A sacred fire kindled by the rays of the sun, was perpetually kept in her temple. […] Vesta’s fire was refined and celestial; whereas Vulcan’s was gross. […] The sacred fire renewed by the rays of the sun, attended the monarchs in their wars. […] Hence, he is painted, stealing fire from heaven, either because he first established forge’s in Scythia, or because he was the inventor of the steel with which we elicit fire from flints. […] The first inhabited the earth; the second, the air; and the third, the fire.
