These impulses of knowledge, of imaginative relaxation, of conduct, are the throbbing of the heart of reason; the first or the second is the primal pulse of every myth; and to the life of every myth each impulse may be, at some period, contributory. […] There are certain questions that nearly every child and every savage asks: What is the world, and what is man? […] She was worshipped, first of the gods, at every feast. […] In memory of his dominion, the feast of Saturnalia was held every year in the winter season. […] The Romans believed that every man had his Genius, and every woman her Juno; that is, a spirit who had given them being, and was regarded as a protector through life.
