The mother of Pentheus, and her sisters, were the leaders in this act, which was considered to have been performed under a divine impulse. […] After their death, their countrymen believed that they were admitted among the gods, and gave them divine honors. […] Others experienced similar effects, and the exhalation was supposed to have a certain divine property. […] He conquered Egypt, which he governed so well and wisely as to receive divine honors from his subjects even during his life. […] They believed in one Supreme Lord and Creator, to whom they attributed all the divine perfections.
