Aon′ides [Aonides], a name of the Muses, from the country Aonia. […] Arca′dia [Arcadia], a delightful country in the center of Peloponnessus, a favorite place of the gods. […] The Arcadian god of shepherds, huntsmen, and country folk, and chief of the inferior deities, is usually considered to have been the son of Mercury and Penelope. […] She lived in the country near Thebes, and proposed to every passer-by the following enigma: “What animal is that which walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening.”
