In those days, the king of a little city was known by every body in his domain, and beloved by all. […] He was the founder, or beginner of their city. […] But Cadmus was now alone; and he could not build a city alone, nor find inhabitants for it. […] He might have followed a heifer; and where she lay down might have been a spot on which he thought fit to build a city.
